Prof Chima has headed three Departments (Geography and Planning, Environmental Resource Management and Urban and Regional planning of the University. He is also a two –time elected Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Studies. He also served as the Financial Secretary of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Abia State University Union, before been elected as the Chairman of ASUU- ASUU in 2008- 2011.

Prof. G.N. Chima has served in many Committees of the University including the Chairman, Senate Security Committee. He is also a member, Abia State University Governing Council (Representing the University Senate), and member governing council William Wesley Theological College (WWTC) Azuiyi Oloko in Ikwuano L.G.A. Prof. G.N. Chima is also a past President of Okigwe Rotary Club (2009-2010) and an elder of the United Evangelical Church (UEC) (Formerly Qua Ibo Church)
Prof. Chima is happily married with children.

Prof. George Nwabuko Chima was inaugurated as chairman, ABSIEC on the 5th September, 2024 by His Excellency, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti OFR the Executive Governor of Abia State. He did his secondary education in Government College Umuahia (1974-1979). He also did his Higher School Education at Federal School of Arts and Science, Aba (1980-1981) before entering University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he studied at all degree levels. During his Masters and PhD degrees, he bagged two(2) Council for the Development of Economic and Social Research in Africa(CODESRIA) awards for academic excellence. In 1996 with Ph.D, he became a lecturer II and rose through the ranks. Prof. G.N. Chima became a Professor in 2011 and delivered the 37th inaugural lecture of Abia State University in April,2018. Prof. Chima has to credit over one hundred and ten (110) published works in International Journals, books (including edited books).
